Goldendoodles vary significantly with their breeding. There are several different types of goldendoodle.  For a proper grooming technique and schedule you will first need to determine which generation you have and its coat type.

-First generation goldendoodles (F1) are products of Golden Retrievers and Poodles. These are first generation hybrids and are thought to carry some health benefits. You should expect a high amount of maintenance and grooming when purchasing this breed.  The coat typically grows to a natural body length of 3-5” and requires regular combing and grooming.  Home maintenance is a must with this breed. Many customers choose to do a short cut to lower maintenance and grooming requirements.

-First generation backcross goldendoodle (F1B) are the products of a goldendoodle being bred back to one of the original breeds, generally a goldendoodle to a poodle. The resulting dog, on average, is ¼ golden retriever and ¾ poodle. Often times this results in an easily matting high maintenance coat, even at shorter lengths. You should expect a high amount of maintenance and grooming when purchasing this breed. Typically this style must be kept on a tight grooming routine.

- Second generation goldendoodles (F2) is the result of a goldendoodle being bred to a goldendoodle. There are very few of these actually bred because they are so widely varied.  Most breeders will choose a more predictable generation.  The hair type of this generation could be thick, curly or wavy and could require the maintenance of either generation above or  the maintenance of a golden retriever or poodle.  There are also second generation backcross goldendoodles (F2B) which is an F1 bred to an F1B and technically also a second generation.

When brushing a goldendoodle special care should be taken to brush the entire coat, including legs and feet, all the way to the skin with the appropriate brush. The coat can be misleading and this breed should always be kept on a regular grooming routine. When bathing this breed at home (not recommended) the coat should be thoroughly dried with a NON HEATED blow dryer, then completely brushed or combed with a fine toothed comb. Do not ever use a heated blow dryer on a dog. This will easily burn their skin and dry out their coat!
