The coat of the West Highland White Terrier is double coated. The outter coat consists of straight hard white hair about 2 inches long with shorter coat on the neck and shoulders. This coat requires a large amount of brushing and home maintenance. Use care to brush all the way to the skin. Due to the nature of the Westie's coat frequent grooming is necessary. The Westie needs to be completely brushed out with undercoat and tangles removed at least weekly and professional grooming should be on a regular routine to avoid matting and discomfort of the dog.
