Cats continually groom themselves. It is recommended that most cats be bathed no more than once per year and only if there is a reason for it (like they smell).  Cats need to be completely brushed out at least weekly to deter excessive shedding, tangling and matting. Take care when brushing your cat to gently brush all the way to the skin, with the correct brush.  With sufficient grooming long haired cats should not need to be shaved, however there are specialty cuts such as a lion cut or full shave to help control excessive shedding.  Coat appearance can be deceiving and mat quickly without attention.  Full service professional grooming is recommended at least every 4-8 weeks.

*To control stress in cats it is highly recommended you have them on a regular grooming schedule.  After purchasing a kitten, introduce him or her to the grooming process at a young age. You should never wait until your cats are matted to have them groomed.
