Regular brushing and combing at least twice weekly is essential in order to remove substantial wooly hair shed from the dense undercoat, and not only the longer outer guard coat which protects the undercoat. The density of the hair coat can be misleading, it is very dense. Match this with the size of this breed, and you have a large grooming task. The Newfoundland should be completely brushed out at least twice weekly to deter excessive shedding, tangling and matting.

When brushing a newfoundland special care should be taken to brush all the way to the skin, with the appropriate brush.

If home maintenance is done properly; full service grooming is recommended every 3-4 weeks, if not professional grooming is recommended at least every 1-2 weeks.
