The sheltie’s coat is double. The outer coat consists of long, straight harsh hair, the undercoat short, furry and so dense as to give the entire coat its "standoffish" quality. This coat requires a large amount of brushing and home maintenance. Use care to brush all the way to the skin. Due to the nature of the Sheltie's coat frequent grooming is necessary. The sheltie needs to be completely brushed out with undercoat and tangles removed at least twice weekly and professional grooming should be on a regular routine to avoid matting and discomfort of the dog.

You may choose for a fun custom cut on this breed, a tight trim, a clean trim or a natural look among other options.

If home maintenance is done properly; full service grooming is recommended every 4 weeks, if not professional grooming is recommended at least every 1-2 weeks.
